What Now?: A Guide to Staying Sane in Uncertain Times
Sunshine, Political Angst, and a Playbook from Writer Laura Carlson
Shortly after the debate debacle, a friend and I were texting about politics. She was feeling energized around mobilizing her skills to fight the good fight. I didn’t mean to discourage her, but I found myself replying that I think it might be too late. Despite the many gorgeous moments I've enjoyed this summer, on that day I was feeling particularly defeated and anxious.
When the world feels like it’s breaking regardless of our hope, activism, or our belief in some kind of divine plan, what do we do with our days? Do we keep going to work as usual?
When our democracy slowly morphs into an autocracy, despite our efforts to do the right thing, what do we do within our communities? Do we keep running our households as usual?
As the planet adapts to our hubris, causing a destabilization that finds us dangling from the ceiling compartments of airplanes, what do we do with our habits? Do we keep ordering from Amazon as usual?
Should a vengeful liar, rapist, and convicted felon who believes he’s Christ resurrected be elected and start implementing what a handful of white men have decided is God’s Plan, what do we do with our free time? Do we keep streaming Netflix as usual?
This summer I’ve had the warm sand between my toes, and a foreboding knot in my stomach.
So…
Writer Laura Carlson gifted me a playbook that I’ve lightly adapted (with permission) for present times. It reminds us to find our feet and establish a more solid foundation for whatever is coming next. I’ve found it helpful. Perhaps you will too. ⬇️
Your Guide to Staying Sane in Uncertain Times
We all aspire to live our best lives, filled with happiness, fulfillment, and achievement, but the path to such a life is not always clear-cut. In the best of times, we seek guidance and inspiration to find our way. When things get ugly we can find ourselves shaken, especially when we feel afraid. Here are some suggestions to help you stay centered.
Invite Loved Ones to Your Home
Our lives are colored by the relationships we nurture. Inviting loved ones over for a meal or just a simple cup of coffee is an impactful way to deepen bonds. In the laughter and shared stories, we find ourselves surrounded by positivity and support. Moreover, such gatherings provide an opportunity to create lasting memories. They remind us that amid our busy schedules, taking time to connect and celebrate together brings not only immeasurable joy and fulfillment, but greater connection to lean into when we need additional support.
Become More Self-Aware
Becoming more self-aware is an ongoing process that allows us to develop a deeper understanding of ourselves. It involves being introspective and reflective, examining our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with curiosity and non-judgment. By actively exploring our motivations, values, and beliefs, we can gain insights into why we act the way we do and make more intentional choices. Additionally, seeking feedback from others and being open to different perspectives can provide valuable insights into how we are perceived by others, helping us identify blind spots and areas for growth. Exploring one’s own biases and unquestioned perspectives is humbling; but it leads to greater openness and patience when trying to understand the motivations of others with whom we may not agree.
Stay Persistent
Every journey towards a goal is dotted with challenges. However, it is persistence that turns these obstacles into stepping stones. Staying persistent doesn’t mean rushing through the journey and straight into burnout, but rather embracing each experience, learning from it, and moving forward. It's about holding onto your vision, dreams and objectives in the face of adversity and drawing strength from the belief that you can achieve them. Persistence reinforces our determination, reminding us that everything that is meaningful to us is worth reaching for with unwavering commitment and tenacity.
Maintain a Positive Attitude
No matter our circumstances, cultivating and sustaining a positive, can-do mindset requires intentional practices and a commitment to personal growth. Practicing mindfulness allows us to stay present and focused, helping to manage stress and negative thoughts. Additionally, maintaining a gratitude journal can shift perspectives by highlighting what’s going well, fostering an attitude of appreciation. When everything seems to be souring, regularly engaging in these activities builds resilience, enhances personal well-being, and creates a more optimistic outlook that supports personal and collective endeavors.
Escape From Stress Regularly
Hobbies add a dash of excitement to our everyday routine. They provide an escape from the stress of daily life, stimulate creativity, and strengthen social connections. Hobbies can be anything from painting or coding to a weekly pickup game of basketball. Regular self-care routines like napping, exercise or meditation also reduce stress. However, investing time in actual activities we love adds layers of joy and fullness to our lives. Hobbies offer a sense of accomplishment, enriching our lives with purpose and satisfaction. They give us a chance to express ourselves, explore our interests, meet new people and discover new passions. We need this in times of adversity.
Set Boundaries and Learn to Say “No”
Creating boundaries is an essential aspect of maintaining a healthy life balance. It's about respecting our own time and energy and ensuring others do the same. Learning to say “no” when needed can be empowering. By setting clear boundaries, we ensure that our time is spent on activities that align with our values and contribute to our goals. Boundaries also protect our mental and emotional well-being, preventing burnout and fostering self-respect. They serve as a reminder that our needs and well-being are important, even when it feels like the world needs us more.
Let’s fight the good fight.
Living in uncertain times is going to be a multifaceted journey. If we’re going to play the long game, we will need to foster social connections, self-awareness, resilience, learning, playfulness, and conscious boundaries. These elements intertwine to create a fulfilling, meaningful life. Embrace these steps to shape a life that resonates with your true self. Remember, regardless of your circumstances your best life is an ongoing journey of growth and discovery, not a destination.
